A comprehensive guide to DWI and the law provides a complete look at what's been called the most common violent crime in America. PIRE (Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation) led the effort to update and enhance this source of information on sanctions and other strategies that can be used in sentencing offenders convicted of driving while intoxicated.
"Guide to Sentencing DWI Offenders, 2nd Edition " includes a new DWI Sentencing Checklist, which summarizes key information on sentencing options for first and multiple DWI offenders. The checklist includes the sanction description, the effectiveness of the sanction in reducing recidivism, and comments about the sanction. The new guide provides detailed information on vehicle-based sanctions, such as the installation of alcohol ignition interlock devices on the vehicles of offenders, immobilization of offender's vehicles, impoundment of vehicles and complete forfeiture of offender's vehicles. In addition, special DWI Courts, modeled after Drug Courts, are described and hold promise in reducing the recidivism of the most egregious offenders. In the treatment arena, it appears that the three most popular treatment philosophies work equally well in reducing the recidivism of addicted offenders.
